Volunteering Abroad Versus a standard Holiday
To holiday or to volunteer abroad, that is the question. We will share our advice with you below on why we feel that you should choose volunteering over your standard vacation.
We all love a vacation, a break from the norm and escaping the daily grind. Do you opt to go to the same resort that you travelled to the year before, visiting the same travel agent to book your standard holiday trip? Have you ever thought of trying something new and making your time abroad more meaningful?
A increasing number of people however are deciding to spend their time abroad giving back to global communities. Working whilst on holiday may seem odd to some but it certainly has its benefits. Firstly there are a number of activities that you can choose from when volunteering abroad from teaching to marine conservation - there is something for everyone if you take the time to explore the projects available to you.
You can use volunteering as an opportunity to develop key transferable skills such as confidence, leadership skills, intercultural communication and teamwork - all vital in the world of work, and will assist you in both your personal life and professional career pathway. Its also great to have on your CV, employers are keen to recruit individuals who can evidence that they have overcome obstacles and challenges, and you will have the added bonus of evidencing this in an international setting.
Authentic Cultural Immersion
If you choose to volunteer abroad in local communities it offer a unique insight into local culture, tradition and heritage - you would be very hard pressed to experience this as a tourist staying in a holiday resort. Staying in a local village you will get to see the 'real way' of life in the community, eat local food and visit places off the beaten track that are unavailable to normal tourists. Sample our in-country itineraries for Fiji and The Cook Islands.
Tourist areas are often overcrowded and overpriced, but of course it doesn't mean that you shouldn't see these places - during your free time you will get to visit and enjoy time in these areas. Volunteering abroad will leave you with a more rounded view of the country that you are visiting.
Develop lifelong friendships
Volunteering with Travel Teacher is a great way to meet people, even if you are travelling solo. With us you will be part of a larger group of like minded volunteers from the UK and overseas from a multitude of backgrounds. You will be part of this journey together and develop lasting memories. Volunteering is not just for singles however, you can join as a couple, group or even on a school trip.
Volunteering abroad can often be cheaper than your usual package holiday. Sharing accommodation with other volunteers is much cheaper than spending your time in hotels in popular tourist areas and eating out every night. You will be staying in a village however so it is important to manage your expectations. Your accommodation will be safe, clean and inviting and will provide you with access to basic humanitarian needs, but you cant expect 5 star hotels when your are working in rural communities.
Another advantage of volunteering is that people you know may be willing to sponsor your trip as it’s for a good cause. Check out our fundraising guide for more information
