Travel Teacher | The day in the life of a volunteer in Fiji
There really is no typical day on a Travel Teacher expedition, each day you will be faced with new challenges, diverse environments and new places to discover. However we will provide you with an overview of the structure of each day.
Rise and shine! You will be up at the crack of dawn, with the opportunity to witness a magnificent sunrise on the Coral Coast, a simply breathtaking sight. You will be invited to join the team at breakfast before attending a morning briefing from your project leader. This briefing will reaffirm the plans for the day and also provide volunteers to ask any questions linked to what's ahead.
At approx 07:30am you will make your way to school with the rest of the team as you walk through the local village, being greeted by the locals with a friendly 'BULA' (Hello). You will arrive at the school ready for morning devotion - a series of songs sung beautiful by the children as a religious devotion.
Your morning will be spent in school supporting the local teacher and inspiring young students in achieving their very best in each lesson. Your enthusiasm, energy and motivational skills will engage students allowing you to build positive rapport and make an impact.
Typical duties in the role as a volunteer will include:
* Assisting the local teacher in the delivery of subject curriculum
* Subjects will include; English, Maths, Social Studies, Sport
* Providing in class support to small groups / individuals
* Reading to small groups
* Leading games / energiser activities
* Providing feedback to students based on their learning
* Accompany students during recess periods
Schools out for our volunteers after recess (approx 11:30) and you will make your way back to our village base for a local lunch and recuperation before setting off on your afternoon expedition.
Travel Teacher's expeditions will take you off the beaten track allowing you to discover hidden gems such as remote waterfalls, uninhibited islands and local village communities. You will have the opportunity to stretch yourself and try something new whilst making lifelong memories.
Upon arriving back in the village in the evening you will have time to get cleaned up in time for dinner. Our local team will be on hand in preparing a traditional Fijian 'Lovo' - cooking underground or earths oven as its meaning. This signals the beginning of your downtime where you will be able to socialise with the locals and your group under the stars around the beach bonfire, sounds perfect doesn't it?
