Volunteering in The Cook Islands

Our Impact

Impact is central to all that we do at Travel Teacher, our volunteer projects in the South Pacific aim to leave a lasting legacy on not only our volunteers / participants but also the schools that we work with.  During this blog you will be able to find out more about our impact through volunteering in Aitutaki, Cook Islands.

In January 2017 we were awarded with charitable status recognising our very own charity The Travel Teacher Foundation as fit for purpose in delivering ethical, authentic impact across our projects worldwide.

The Travel Teacher Foundation

Our charity was created to inspire and equip young people and those who choose to volunteer with us with the skills to reach their full potential.

In the case of our schools in both Fiji and The Cook Islands there are obstacles that need to be overcome if students are able to fulfil this and have a brighter future.

We are delighted to be able to reveal progress in an ongoing project that we have funded and are helping to develop at Araura College in Aitutaki, Cook Islands.

During our time at the school over the summer it was highlighted that students have restricted access to healthy produce whilst in school and instead many opt for simple foods which make up the bulk of their diet. This is a problem in the school as well as the wider island. Obesity and diseases such as diabetes are a huge problem in the Cook Islands and ultimately this will have an effect on the lifespan of future generations on the island.

To help combat this and provide access to fresh, healthy produce in the summer we began work on building a fruit and veg garden at the school for the benefit of the students and the wider community.  A number of planters have been developed as a growth spot for a number of island fruits including Pau Pau, mango and bananas, we will also be producing a number of veggies and herbs also.

The project will see students take ownership of maintaining the garden and also utilising items for the schools tuck shop and to also sell on to wider island resorts, establishing a small school enterprise. The project is incredibly exciting and ewe have already seen some considerable development in the 7 weeks since our project.

This is an incredible project to be involved with, the students have a great platform to develop wider skills, have access to high quality fresh produce and also have an opportunity to be involved in enterprise. As a charity we see this sustainable project as something that will have real impact on the wider community, we are excited to see how this project progresses over the coming months.

We are continually looking to raise funds to help sustain our projects and need your help in supporting us.  As a charity we will be delivering a number of events over the next 12 months to continue making an impact in both countries.

Our next aim is to provide further infrastructure to our school in Fiji, Ratu Filise Memorial School by supporting the development of further classroom space for a growing school.

There are a variety of ways that you are are to support us;
